Meet Marylyn Chen: Park Pride’s Community Building Intern!

Say hello to Marylyn Chen, Park Pride’s Community Building intern!

Marylyn is an undergraduate student at Georgia Tech, where she’s earning her degree in Industrial Engineering with a minor in Computing and Intelligence. In her free time, she likes to dance, travel and spend time out in nature.

We took some time to talk to Marylyn about herself and what makes parks so great!

Why are parks important?

They provide communities with a means to unwind, exercise, and enjoy nature. They give us an understanding and appreciation for local flora and fauna.

Park Pride’s mission is “to engage communities to activate the power of parks.” What does the “power of parks” mean to you?

The “Power of Parks” is to bring communities together for activities such as birdwatching, hiking, sports, etc. through a mutual appreciation of nature.

What do you most enjoy about working with Park Pride so far?

The best part about Park Pride is the amazing staff that I get to work with every day who are so passionate about the work they do! Park Pride’s mission closely align with my beliefs in environmental stewardship, so I hope to continue to contribute to the movement as well!

Why is it important for communities to have a voice in their parks?

It is important for communities to have a voice because the park exists to serve the communities needs and desires. If a park cannot fulfill its communities’ needs, no one will want to use it, and the park cannot reach its full potential.

Now for a couple of fun questions! Do you have a favorite musician/band?

I have many, but some of my favorites are Mamamoo, Panic! At the Disco, and Lana Del Rey!

Tea or coffee?

Tea!

What’s your favorite park activity?

My favorite park activity is walking and spending time with friends.

We’re so happy to have you here at Park Pride Marylyn! Welcome to the team!
