December was the month of ribbon-cutting ceremonies! Last month, Park Pride helped celebrate new amenities at two local parks — West Cascade Park and Melvin Drive Park.
The West Cascade Park ribbon-cutting was especially exciting because it’s Atlanta’s newest park! Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU) Q used to be the only NPU in the city without a park but, thanks to West Cascade, that’s no longer the case.
Former Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was a champion for bringing a park to the NPU and, when she was in office, the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation acquired land on Danforth Road with help from The Conservation Fund.
Since then, Councilmember Marci Collier Overstreet worked with the West Cascade Park Commission to engage the community and partners to make this park a reality. During the program, she said that she envisions the new park as “a haven of recreation, relaxation and community connection.” Park Pride is proud to have helped bring an incredible playground to the park, which includes swings, a climbing structure and a huge slide.
Park Pride also headed over to Melvin Drive Park to unveil its new playground! We have worked closely with the Friends of Melvin Drive for several years, providing grants for a walking trail, gazebo and now, a new playground. The design was fully vetted by the community, down to the color of the playground equipment.
City of Atlanta officials also debuted a dog park, the first in Southwest Atlanta. The 50-acre park is situated near several schools and, with these new amenities, the park serves as a space for friends and families to play and enjoy the outdoors.
Be sure to head over to these Atlanta parks to check out the new amenities!
