The tour will be led by the Friends of Constitution Lakes and Park Naturalist Tasha Messer\, and guests will hear stories about the park’s history and wildlife\, leading to a deeper\, more holistic understanding and appreciation of the park. \nThis 267-acre DeKalb County park was once the site of a brickyard\, the lakes were created when water filled the clay excavation pits. The production of bricks ceased 50 years ago and nature has since restored the space to a wetland habitat capable of sustaining birds\, fish\, wildlife\, and a wide range of plant species. \nNOTE: Free parking is available in the parking lot. There is a paved trail and boardwalk from the parking lot to the lake. Other sections are natural surface or boardwalk.

When designed well\, they become welcoming places where everyone feels like they belong — regardless of age\, background\, or ability. \nThrough our Park Design Consultation & Workshop\, Park Pride has paired seven community groups with volunteer landscape architects to produce conceptual plans to reimagine their park’s gathering spaces. On Wednesday\, August 27\, from 6:30 – 8 p.m.\, our Friends groups will present these plans! \nThis event is free and open to registered Friends of Park groups. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from your peers about ways to make your park’s gathering spaces more memorable\, safe\, accessible\, and welcoming!

The 280-acre park was developed on the site of the former Bellwood Quarry and features a reservoir\, trails\, meadows and incredible views of the Atlanta skyline. Recently renamed in honor of Atlanta’s 56th mayor\, the park stands as a testament to both natural beauty and civic legacy. Thanks to the leadership of Friends of Shirley Clarke Franklin Park\, this space continues to evolve as a gathering place\, a sanctuary\, and a shining example of community-driven transformation. \nOur walk will be approximately one mile along a paved route with a few steep hills. We’ll see you there! Bring your coffee and your walking shoes. \nNOTE: We’ll meet by the Phoenix statue near the parking lot. The address 1660 Johnson Rd NW will direct you there.
