The Park Pride Community Coalition is a group of park advocates and community activists that works to promote a park and greenspace agenda for the City of Atlanta. Formed in 2001 to raise the visibility of park issues during the Mayoral and City Council elections, the group launched the Park Atlanta Rescue Campaign (PARC 911) and asked candidates and community organizations to endorse its nine-point plan for improving the City’s park system. All Mayoral candidates and the vast majority of Council candidates endorsed the agenda, which marked a turning point for Atlanta’s parks. Since the PARC 911 Campaign, there have been tangible improvements to Atlanta’s park system and heightened support among civic, corporate and government leaders. In 2005, the City of Atlanta increased the Parks Department budget by nearly $3 million, passed a $105 million park and greenspace bond, and created a BeltLine Tax Allocation District that will raise $1.6 billion for a project that will create more than 1,000 acres of new parkland linked by 33 miles of new trails.
